Club History

The Bournemouth Kanku Shotokan Karate club has been in existence since 1964, starting in various halls around the area, until it made Stokewood Road its permanent training base in 1967. It has hosted many week and weekend courses with Japanese Instructors, such as Kanazawa, Enoeda, Tomita, Ohta etc.

The Bournemouth Kanku Shotokan Karate club, being the first club in Bournemouth, with a pedigree that can be traced, has over the years watched many other Shotokan clubs spring up in the area, with Instructors that have little or no experience and no knowledge of what they are doing.

The club is affiliated to the Federation of British Shotokan Karate Unions (International), who is registered and in membership of Karate England, the only legal governing body, recognised and funded by Sport England (National Sports Council).
